Rebecca’s: A Coffee House
Rebecca Zearing looks around the large open room, filled with art, music, poetry and people, and says softly, in some awe at what she has wrought, “Sometimes I forget it’s mine.” Her customers don’t, though; they return repeatedly to the sunny yellow walls of her coffeehouse/ cafe for sustenance with soul. Besides the homemade muffins, soups and quiches turned out in the small kitchen, Rebecca’s offers an acoustic jam session on Thursdays, jazz on Fridays and an openmic poetry reading twice a month. Here’s where you can get your five minutes of fame—or at least your time in front of an audience, some there for the coffee or food, some for the experience. Local artists’ works are offered for sale on several walls. A mural behind the small stage resembles the South Park surroundings, except the street depicted is eerily empty. And even in the wee hours of the weekend, when the coffeehouse is open around the clock, that hardly ever happens here; the community is too much at home to stay away for long.
